Klint Homes
Where are we, and how did you end up here of all places?
For almost a decade, I lived in Amsterdam with my husband, photographer Pie Aerts, and our 4-year-old daughter. But with our second daughter on the way, we decided it was time for a change of scenery — less tram bells, more birdsong. So we moved to Haarlem: a smaller city, more family-friendly, with nature, more space, a garden, and a 15-minute bike ride to the beach. Now I can trade city rush for sea breeze whenever I want.
Describe yourself in one sentence!
A conscious, nature-loving homebody with a soft spot for earthy tones… and perhaps a mild obsession with rearranging furniture until it “feels right.”
What do you like the most about your home?
We’ve just moved in, so I’m still in the honeymoon phase with the house. But what instantly stole my heart are the huge doors in our bedroom that open onto a south-facing balcony. Morning light, fresh air, and a sunny spot to wake up, or read in the evening
What was your thinking behind the colour scheme in your home?
We wanted a calm and warm base that feels timeless, but with pockets of colour to bring certain rooms to life. A balance between serenity and personality, a home where nothing screams at you, but doesn’t feel boring either.
Which colours did you choose and what attracted you to them in particular?
Our main colour is 38 — Cedar, warm, soft, and grounding.Cedar gives that quiet warmth without tipping into beige-overload. We used 53 — Tapenade as an accent in our bedroom, Tapenade is a natural, calming green that makes you exhale a little slower. 38 — Cedar again in the baby room and bathroom, and a mix of 150 — Buttercup and 14 — Dusty for our daughter’s room. Dusty is pink’s more sophisticated cousin, perfect for a little girl’s room without feeling overly sweet.
What were you most satisfied with?
Honestly, all of it. 38 — Cedar turned out to be the hero of the house. We loved it so much we spontaneously decided to use it in the bathroom too. And Dusty made our daughter’s “it has to be pink” request work for both of us. I even have a little leftover paint, which I plan to use to transform her mud kitchen in the garden as a surprise.
Describe your decor style in three words!
Warm, homey, earthy, with a “collected over time” feel. I’m drawn to natural materials, textures, and pieces that tell a story.
What’s your best tip for anyone who wants to repaint?
Pick one colour you absolutely love and build around it. And don’t skip the swatches — live with them for a few days, see them in different light. Paint can be like people: it changes depending on the mood and the setting.
Which would be your favorite colour from the Klints colour palette if you had to choose just one?
It has to be 38 — Cedar. It’s warm, subtle, and unique, a colour I hadn’t really seen before. In our home’s bright light, it even has a soft pastel touch without losing depth. It’s our perfect middle ground: cosy but fresh, neutral but with personality.
