Welcome home to a family in Kreuzberg, Berlin, a 19th-century apartment with soaring ceilings, a 150-year-old tree outside the window, and a bold blue living room that became an oasis just days after their second child was born.

Where are we, and how did you end up here? Tell us a little about your home and what made you choose this particular place.

We are in Kreuzberg, Berlin in our Family home. We've been searching for a new apartment for years. Right with the birth of our second child last year we got to move in.

How would you describe yourself (or yourselves) in one sentence?

Always evolving.

What do you love most about your home?Is there a particular room, detail, or feeling that makes it especially meaningful to you?

I don't know where to start! I love the super high ceilings, how the light that comes in through the big windows, the almost 150 year old tree in front of our house. The house was built in 1880 and has a lot of history. You can feel that.

Colour can do so much to uplift your mood and even just a subtle change can do a lot for the coziness of a place.”

What was your vision for the colour scheme? How did you approach choosing colours, and what atmosphere did you want to create?

The Berlin winter is very long and grey, so we wanted our home to balance that out with colour. I do like a concept but when it comes to painting or interior in general it's mostly going with the gut feeling. We tried many colours and in the end it's just what feels right. I don't like when it's too planned through. Especially for a big apartment like this it feels overwhelming. So we like to go step by step, if things don't match, we change them again.

Which colours did you choose – and what drew you to them? Tell us about the colours you used throughout the home and why you selected them.

For the living room we were looking for a warm colour, as the room is partly north-facing. In the end we ended up choosing 76 — Breeze, a light blue with red undertones. Not exactly what you would think of as warm, but our friend Marten, who is an interior designer, suggested to take a blue tone. The cold light makes the blue shine even more, where all other colours just turned grey. This choice makes me happy every day.

What were you most satisfied with?

The butter yellow room: it feels calm, positive, and warm.

Describe your decor style in three words!

French classic country, English cottage, and colourful Scandinavian.

What’s your best tip for anyone who wants to repaint?

Don’t go for the safe option: go for what actually lights you up.

Which would be your favourite colour from the Klints colour palette if you had to choose just one?

That’s a hard one. I’d probably say 67 – Rioja, because it works surprisingly well with all the  colours in my home. My all-time favourite colour is lilac though, so Viola is definitely still  on my wishlist.
