Raphi

Meet Raphi — a design student from Cologne with a serious eye for colour. What started as flea market hunting during the pandemic has slowly transformed the apartment into a vibrant, colour-filled home.

Where are we here, and how did you end up here of all places?

We're in my apartment in Cologne. Actually, I ended up here because of COVID. There wasn't much to do back then, so I spent a lot of time at flea markets. That's where I started buying my first vintage furniture and furnishing my shared apartment. And now here we are.

What do you like most about your home?

The variety of colours. I'm still in the middle of it, but so far, every room is colourful and simply exudes joie de vivre without being too much, in my opinion.

What was the idea behind the colour scheme in your apartment?

Something in me is hugely fascinated by 70s colours: lots of green, orange, red, and brown. That's basically the foundation. But at the same time, I try not to make it look old-fashioned, but to mix it with modern elements. For me, the interplay between red and green is one of the most beautiful colour combinations ever.

Which colours did you choose and what appealed to you most about them?

In addition to the 70s palette, I'm drawn to abstract and unusual things: objects that look like something else but still have a practical use. I also love to connect with the inner child we all still have through my interior design style.

Describe your decorating style in three words!

Colourful, eye-catching, vintage-inspired.

What is your best tip for anyone who wants to repaint?

Prime. Always prime first. One of my biggest fails as an interior creator was painting a wall with cheap hardware store paint without priming it first. I painted it four times and it still didn't look good. Since then, I've sworn: no more walls without priming.

If you could only choose one, what would be your favorite colour from the Klint's palette?

54 – Maraschino. I used it as a lacquer in my kitchen, which was mainly decorated in yellow and wood tones, to add a few red accents. I painted my pantry with it, and to this day, I look at this colour and it just makes me happy.
