Klint Homes
Where are we and how did you end up here?
We’re in our first home in Amsterdam East, a place full of light and views. A home where we not only live but both work as well.
Describe yourselves in one sentence.
Tom could best be described as autumn, someone who seeks the warmth of home and fills the space with cooking and scent. Vere is more outward looking, in search of stories and wind in her hair.
What do you love most about your home?
The light in our home is fantastic. Because of the many windows there is almost always a spot where the sun finds its way in and lights up the colours inside. At the same time there is plenty to see outside. We look out over water with houseboats, herons flying past in wide strokes, cyclists crossing the bridge and from the table we can even see one of the last windmills in Amsterdam turning.
What was your idea behind the colour scheme?
Our biggest wish was to give the different rooms their own atmosphere through colour. Because we both live and work here it helps to create that distinction. Not just a house with different functions but also a home we were creating together for the first time. Fortunately our wishes aligned well.
Which colours did you choose and what drew you to them?
In the living space we wanted as much warmth and cosiness as possible, with 51 — Biscotti as the base and small touches of 130 — Ladybug on the dining chair and the side table. It’s a plus that Klint offers lacquer as well as wall paint because it lets you play with smaller accents.
To give the kitchen which is part of the same space a slightly different feel we used 147 — Sauvignon, a fresher tone that lifted the whole area.
For the bedroom we wanted something cooler. With 139 — Tundra we immediately felt it could make our small room a place of calm. The wall dresser for our baby who arrived in December is painted in 28 — Pippi. That makes it not only functional but beautiful and we get a tingle each time we open it.
The downstairs studio and workspace has 27 — Oatmilk as the base. We both work with images and wanted the walls more neutral so we can hang sketches and respond to whatever we’re working on. The cabinets painted in 64 — Early Blue make the space feel more special.
What are you most proud of?
When we first viewed this place everything was grey and stark white. There was no floor and wires were hanging from the ceiling. We’re both more fond of older houses with odd corners, quirky windows and creaking floors but that wasn’t an option. We saw this place as a challenge to turn it into something with warmth, calm and a sense of home and Klint’s colours made that possible.
Describe your interior style in three words.
Playful, colourful and warm.
What is your best tip for someone who wants to repaint?
Don’t be afraid of colour. Order samples to see them in real life because it really is different from what you see on a screen.
If you could only pick one colour from the Klint palette which would it be?
130 — Ladybug is a colour we’ve used in many places as a kind of surprise. It brings the softness in the rooms to life.
